Rajasthan Royals kicked off their 2026 IPL campaign in dominant fashion, handing a heavy defeat to the five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
The fourth match of the season saw a fascinating captaincy narrative: on one side was the IPL’s youngest captain, Riyan Parag, and on the other, the MS Dhoni-mentored Ruturaj Gaikwad. The clash took place at the Barsapara Stadium in Assam. Due to recent inclement weather, the ground had been under covers for several days, leaving significant moisture in the pitch. Naturally, the toss was crucial, and Rajasthan Royals elected to field first after winning it.
For the first time in CSK colors, the in-form Sanju Samson walked out to bat, but the Chennai top order crumbled under the pressure of Rajasthan’s clinical bowling attack. Both openers were back in the pavilion with just 19 runs on the board. While Sarfaraz Khan showed promise with a brief cameo of 17 runs off 12 balls, he failed to convert it into a big score.
As the wickets tumbled, it was Jamie Overton who staged a lone recovery. Partnering with Anshul Kamboj, Overton forged a vital 33-run stand for the tenth wicket. His gritty 43 off 36 balls pushed Chennai to a respectable total of 127. Without his contribution, CSK might have struggled to even cross the 100-run mark.

The Rajasthan bowling unit was exceptional. Rabindra Jadeja, who was traded from CSK, seemed to be playing with a point to prove against his former franchise. Rajasthan’s clinical effort was led by a trio of bowlers—Jofra Archer, Nandre Burger, and Ravindra Jadeja—each claiming two wickets.

Chasing a modest target of 128, Rajasthan Royals opened with Yashasvi Jaiswal and the young sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Having recently turned 15, Suryavanshi announced his arrival on the big stage with a breathtaking display of power hitting. He smashed a half-century in just 15 balls, marking the third-fastest fifty in IPL history.
Suryavanshi was eventually dismissed for a fiery 52 off 17 balls, while Jaiswal played a steady hand, scoring 38 off 36 balls.
Rajasthan Royals won by 8 wickets (with 47 balls remaining).
While CSK struggled to navigate the damp conditions over 20 overs, Rajasthan made the chase look effortless, wrapping up the game in just 12.1 overs. The stark difference between the two sides lay in their bowling discipline. Furthermore, CSK felt the void left by the injured MS Dhoni and several other key players. Poor fielding, dropped catches, and conceded extras only added to Chennai’s woes, ensuring a nightmare start for the defending heavyweights.
