Mumbai Indians Break 13-Year Curse, Chase Down KKR’s Mountain of Runs

Article by Suvankar Roy

In a high-octane clash at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai Indians (MI) finally exorcised a decade-long demon, defeating arch-rivals Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to secure their first opening-match victory in 13 years. In the second match of the IPL 2026 season, MI’s clinical chase silenced the KKR faithful and rewrote the record books at their home ground. After winning the toss, MI skipper Hardik Pandya elected to bowl first—a decision that initially seemed to backfire. KKR’s 37-year-old veteran Ajinkya Rahane defied his age, unleashing a masterclass of timing and power. Rahane smashed 67 off just 40 balls, finding a perfect partner in New Zealand’s explosive opener Finn Allen, who blazed his way to 37 off 17 deliveries.
While KKR’s record-signing Cameron Green failed to live up to the hype—departing for an 18-run cameo off 10 balls—Mumbai’s own local boy, Ankrish Raghuvanshi, ensured the momentum didn’t slip. Despite being gifted a “second life” by a dropped catch from Rohit Sharma, Raghuvanshi capitalized to score a brilliant 51 off 29 balls. Rinku Singh added the finishing touches with a gritty 33 off 21 balls, propelling KKR to a daunting total of 220/4. Amidst the carnage, Shardul Thakur emerged as MI’s standout bowler, finishing with figures of 3/39 in his 4-over spell.

History was against Mumbai. Since 2012, the franchise had failed to win their opening game of the season. Facing a target of 221, the pressure was immense. Conversely, KKR’s bowling unit was reeling from the absence of key pacers Harshit Rana, Matheesha Pathirana, and Akash Deep, all of whom are sidelined for the season due to injuries.
What followed was a nightmare for the KKR bowlers. Rohit Sharma, looking lean and focused with the upcoming World Cup in sight, turned the powerplay into a personal highlight reel. Rohit reached his fifty in just 23 balls—the fastest half-century of his IPL career.
Alongside Ryan Rickelton, Rohit dismantled the KKR attack. The duo stitched together a massive 148-run opening stand, setting a new record for the highest opening partnership at the Wankhede Stadium.

  • Rohit Sharma: 78 runs (38 balls; 6 fours, 6 sixes)
  • Ryan Rickelton: 81 runs (43 balls)

Despite a late run-out for Rickelton and the dismissal of Rohit, Mumbai reached the target in 19.1 overs, winning the match by 6 wickets.
Questions are already being raised regarding KKR’s tactical blunders. Their premier spin duo, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy, proved ineffective, leading many to wonder if captaincy failed to utilize the bowlers correctly. Furthermore, the decision to not give Cameron Green a single over despite the mounting pressure has left fans and analysts baffled.
With this victory, Mumbai Indians have finally washed away 13 years of opening-day disappointment, signaling a dominant start to their 2026 campaign.
