Tragic End to a Heroic Chase: Gujarat Titans Edge Delhi Capitals in 1-Run Thriller

Article by Suvankar Roy

The Arun Jaitley Stadium witnessed arguably the match of the IPL 2026 season so far, as the clash between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Gujarat Titans (GT) went down to the very last ball. In a game defined by injury-defying bravery, strategic blunders, and high-octane drama, Gujarat Titans managed a narrow “jailbreak” win, securing their first points of the season by just a single run.

The Foundations: Gill and Sundar Power GT to 210

After being put into bat, Gujarat faced an early setback with the dismissal of Sai Sudharsan. However, skipper Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler quickly shifted the momentum. Buttler was at his explosive best, smashing a 27-ball 52 and taking a particular liking to Mukesh Kumar’s pace.

The masterstroke of the innings was promoting Washington Sundar to number four. Sundar vindicated the decision by scoring his maiden IPL half-century (55 off 32), anchoring a massive 104-run partnership with Gill, who led from the front with a classy 70. GT finished their 20 overs at a formidable 210/4.

The Chase: KL Rahul’s ‘Time Machine’ and Miller’s Grit

Chasing 211, Pathum Nissanka provided a brisk start, but it was KL Rahul who stole the show. Playing with the flair of his peak 2018 form, Rahul hammered a 29-ball fifty, eventually reaching 92. While he was at the crease, a DC victory looked inevitable.

The drama intensified when David Miller was forced to retire hurt due to a finger injury. However, with the game slipping away after Rahul’s dismissal, the “Killer” Miller returned to the crease. Needing 36 off the final two overs, Miller tore into Mohammed Siraj, looting 23 runs in the 19th over to bring the equation down to 13 off the last six balls.

The Final Over Heartbreak

The final over, bowled by Prasidh Krishna, was pure theater. After Vipraj Nigam struck a boundary off the first ball and was dismissed shortly after, the responsibility fell on Miller. With 2 runs needed off the last 2 balls, Miller made the controversial decision to turn down a single, backing himself to finish the game. He missed the final delivery—a slower bouncer—and as Kuldeep Yadav scrambled for a desperate run, Jos Buttler executed a clinical direct hit to seal a 1-run victory for the Titans.

Where Did Delhi Capitals Lose the Plot?

While the match was close, several tactical errors cost DC the game:

• Bowling Struggles: Except for Lungi Ngidi (1-24), every DC bowler conceded more than 10 runs per over. The decision to exhaust Mukesh Kumar’s overs early rather than saving him for the death was questionable.

• Selection Issues: The continued inclusion of Nitish Rana, who has struggled for form, over explosive talents like Prithvi Shaw or Abishek Porel, raised eyebrows.

• Tactical Misstep: DC opted for a third spinner in Vipraj Nigam but barely utilized him with the ball. Many feel an extra specialist batter would have been more effective on this surface.

• The Penultimate Ball Mistake: Miller’s refusal to take a single on the fifth ball of the final over proved fatal. A single would have ensured a Super Over at the very least.

Rashid Khan: The Difference Maker

Amidst the batting fireworks, Rashid Khan proved why he is the best in the business. His spell of 3/17 in 4 overs was the turning point, as he claimed the crucial wickets of Axar Patel and Sameer Rizvi to stifle DC’s middle order. Unsurprisingly, he was named Player of the Match.

Brief Scores:

• Gujarat Titans: 210/4 (20 overs) – Gill 70, Sundar 55, Buttler 52.

• Delhi Capitals: 209/8 (20 overs) – Rahul 92, Nissanka 41, Miller 41*; Rashid 3/17.

• Result: Gujarat Titans won by 1 run.
