Delhi Capitals vs. Lucknow Super Giants: A Clash of Stars and High Stakes

Article by Suvankar Roy

The fifth match of the 2026 season sees the Delhi Capitals (DC) face off against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Both squads boast a potent mix of seasoned superstars and explosive young talent, making this a difficult contest to call. However, the shadow of injury looms large over both camps as several key players remain sidelined.

Injury Concerns and Key Absences
Lucknow is sweating over the fitness of Wanindu Hasaranga. Despite being acquired for ₹2 Crore, the Sri Lankan board is yet to issue a fitness certificate for the star spinner. On the other hand, Delhi Capitals are grappling with the absence of Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc. Starc, who was retained for a staggering ₹11.75 Crore, is currently recovering from lingering elbow and arm injuries.

The Battle of the Pace Batteries:
Both teams possess formidable fast-bowling line-ups. LSG welcomes back the lightning-fast Mayank Yadav, whose raw pace has already made him a sensation. Meanwhile, Delhi is buzzing with the inclusion of Auqib Nabi, the man who recently scripted history by leading his team to their maiden Ranji Trophy title with a spectacular bowling display in the 2025-26 season.
There are also personal points to prove. Mohammed Shami, leading the LSG attack, is on a mission to reclaim his spot in the national side. Similarly, Delhi’s Mukesh Kumar, who recently lost his place in the Indian team, is desperate to find his rhythm and make a statement.

  • LSG Pace Attack: Shami, Nortje, Mayank Yadav, Avesh Khan, and Prince Yadav.
  • DC Pace Attack: Auqib Nabi, Chameera, Ngidi, Mukesh Kumar, and T. Natarajan.

Spin Dominance: Delhi’s Trump Card?
On paper, Delhi Capitals appear significantly stronger in the spin department. They boast India’s premier spin duo, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel, complemented by the talented Vipraj Nigam. LSG’s spin responsibilities will largely rest on the shoulders of Digvesh Rathi.
Interestingly, the match will be played on the red soil pitch of the Ekana Stadium. While it is the home ground for LSG, it is also familiar territory for Delhi’s Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam, who hail from the region.

Tactical Shifts and Selection Dilemmas
After a disappointing run last year due to excessive experimentation, Delhi seems focused on stability. With Ben Duckett ruled out of this year’s IPL, the management has confirmed that KL Rahul will open the innings. The big question remains: who will partner him? Will it be the consistent Pathum Nissanka, Bengal’s rising star Abishek Porel, or Prithvi Shaw, who has made a roaring comeback in domestic cricket? Nitish Rana, the highest run-getter for Delhi in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, is slated for the crucial No. 3 spot.
Delhi Capitals Probable XI:

  1. KL Rahul (wk)
  2. Pathum Nissanka*
  3. Nitish Rana
  4. Tristan Stubbs*
  5. Axar Patel (C)
  6. David Miller*
  7. Ashutosh Sharma
  8. Vipraj Nigam
  9. Auqib Nabi
  10. Dushmantha Chameera*
  11. Kuldeep Yadav
  12. T. Natarajan

In a major tactical shift, LSG management has decided to promote captain Rishabh Pant to the No. 3 position—a spot previously occupied by Nicholas Pooran. Last season, both Pooran and Mitchell Marsh crossed the 400-run mark, setting a high bar for the middle order.

LSG (probable): 1 Mitchell Marsh, 2 Aiden Markram, 3 Nicholas Pooran, 4 Rishabh Pant (capt, wk), 5 Ayush Badoni, 6 Abdul Samad, 7 Akshat Raghuwanshi/Himmat Singh, 8 Shahbaz Ahmed, 9 Mohammed Shami, 10 Mayank Yadav, 11 Digvesh Rathi, 12 Anrich Nortje

Can Rishabh Pant lead LSG to victory against his former franchise? Or will Axar Patel’s Delhi Capitals, fueled by the sting of missing out on the playoffs last year, bounce back with a win? Only time will tell as these two giants collide.
