In the heart of rural Bengal, a revolution is taking place on the football pitch. On Sunday, January 25th, the Tarun Dol club of Chaknan village, located in the Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal, hosted a high-octane one-day knockout women’s football tournament.
What makes this tournament so remarkable? In a region where traditional mindsets often confine women to the kitchen, Tarun Dol is shattering the glass ceiling. Their mission is clear: to prove that women are second to none and to ignite a passion for football among girls in rural districts. By providing a platform for these athletes, the club is offering a glimmer of hope and a new path for local talent.

The Road to the Final
The tournament featured eight powerhouse teams from various districts, each bringing elite energy and fierce competition to the pitch from the opening whistle.
- Semi-Final 1: A classic clash between Kolkata and Bongaon. After a grueling first half with no side yielding, Kolkata broke the deadlock in the second half, securing a 1-0 victory to punch their ticket to the final.
- Semi-Final 2: This match saw a heavy-weight bout between the tournament favorites, Basirhat, and last year’s runners-up, Panskura. The game took a dramatic turn when the Basirhat goalkeeper suffered a fall while attempting a save. Panskura capitalized on the opening, slotting home the decisive goal to win 1-0.
The Grand Finale: Panskura Claims Glory
The atmosphere reached a fever pitch as Panskura faced off against Kolkata in the final. With spectators lining every inch of the ground, the tension was palpable. Following a scoreless first half, Panskura’s relentless pressure paid off in the second period. They found the back of the net to seal a 1-0 victory, crowning themselves the tournament champions.
Reflecting on the triumph, Panskura captain Moumi Doloi shared an emotional sentiment “Losing in the final last year was heartbreaking. We learned from our past mistakes and gave 100% this time. This championship is the result of our collective team effort.”

The initiative taken by Chaknan’s Tarun Dol is nothing short of exemplary. By fostering talent in the rural heartlands, tournaments like this serve as a vital supply chain for the Bengal state team and, ultimately, the Indian national squad.
